First Stop Friday October: Recaps and Pictures

(Kelly Bennett, 780s Blog)

The library rocked this past Friday, October 1, 2010 when Timothy Monger State Park and The Bell Beat played a free show for the library’s new First Stop Friday concert series. The multipurpose room of the recently renovated library was packed with music fans, library patrons and friends.

The Bell Beat used technology to their advantage and set up what they’ve been calling a Sh! Mob. They set up a projector and audience members send pictures and Twitter messages to an address set up especially for this purpose. Then, through the magic of technology, these images and messages appear on the screen behind the band. Judging by the number of messages and pictures on the screen, people really enjoyed this innovative interaction. They also enjoyed the beautiful folk rock the band played which included a dobro solo as well as harmonica.

Timothy Monger State Park, featuring Tim Monger from Ann Arbor northern rock favorites Great Lakes Myth Society, played a set of his solo work with a backing band. The band, which consists of the cream of Ann Arbor’s folk scene crop, features a trumpeter, fairly unusual for a rock band. They played a mixture of tunes from Monger’s first solo CD and his latest upcoming release, his first in six years.

First Stop Friday is a monthly concert series at the Ferndale Public Library featuring two local bands on the first Friday of each month. The concerts are free for all ages and run from 6:30 -9:00 PM.
