Peace Action Michigan Heads to DC
Area peace and human rights activists are joining labor union members and other activists in Michigan leaving on buses to be part of “One Nation Working Together” this weekend in Washington, DC . One Nation Working Together (ONWT) was initiated by the national NAACP, the SEIU, La Raza and cosponsored by hundreds of labor, human rights, peace and community organizations. The rally will be held on the Mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial and is expected to bring hundreds of thousands to the nation’s capitol.
One hundred fifty people, organized by the Detroit Area Peace With Justice Network, will leave at 8:00pm on Friday October 1, 2010 from the parking lot of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The church is at the northeast corner of Coolidge and Oak Park Blvd (Nine-and-a-half mile).
“We are going to Washington to demand fulfillment of the dreams we voted for in 2008” said Al Fishman , one of the organizers. “We are honored to have the participation of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP, and we are united in making October 2nd an important milestone in our November 2nd Get Out The Vote campaign”
Several of the travelers are members of Peace Action Michigan, a state-wide organization based in the Community Arts Building in Ferndale. “This is how we get people involved in Democracy,” said Helen Webber, an organizer for the group. “We need to show up in numbers and get them to listen to us.”
