When Dennis Warrilow began working at the Ferndale Fire Department nearly 25 years ago, some of the equipment for rescuing people and putting out fires was not as advanced as it is today. But yet, many of the tools of the firefighter’s trade are basics that have saved lives for over a hundred years. At the FPD they use a combination of old school gear, new technology, manpower and a whole lot of water to keep homes and people safe.
While the Library’s ‘Tween Book Club and The Science Fiction Book Club have taken a temporary break, community book discussion continues. Book Parties at the Emory, a regular extra-library activity, is back on Thursday, Jan. 20. The Financial Planning Committee held a public meeting on Dec. 29, 2010 to present options to residents for balancing the city’s budget, recommending that Council puts a Headlee Over-Ride on the ballot for the residents to vote on. The presentation was just a rough draft of what the Committee will be presenting to Council, who will make the ultimate decision of how to move forward.
This has been a fun and interesting year for wine. We’ve been able to hone our selection even further, sussing out good deals where there were thought to be none, fighting to get products desired but not previously available in Michigan brought in, and most importantly of all, helping the customers at Western Market find real wine that they can connect with.

The Financial Committee, made up of 11 residents and 1 businessperson, has been meeting each Wednesday since September 15 to discuss ideas for how the City can get past the $3 million dollar deficit they are facing for Fiscal Year Ending 2012. There is not yet a consensus on what those solutions might be, but they are expected to report their ideas to City Council on November 2….(read more)
