Michigan Works! Career Center has formed a new group designed to specifically address the unique needs of the 21st Century Worker. The groups will meet at Ferndale, Royal Oak, Clawson, and Madison Heights Public Libraries (see schedule) and the objective of the free two-hour meetings is to help workers focus on a career.

But even though the legislature has a long way to go, Affirmations Community Center wants people to know that LGBT workers are valued and sought after by companies that do work in the state. Up to twenty such employers are coming together for Michigan’s first LGBT Job Expo at Affirmations on June 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Veteran’s Day is Nov. 11, 2011 and The City of Ferndale will hold its annual observance at 11 a.m., at the Memorial Mall located on Livernois, one block south of 9 Mile Rd….On Saturday, November 12, 2011, a special Veterans Fair will be held from 10 am-3 pm, at Oakland Schools, located at 2111 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford, Michigan.

“Once you check that box, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been.” The biggest fear of many with a criminal record is that once they admit having been convicted of a crime they are automatically over-looked as potential employees. “I’ve been free for twenty years, and I’ve done my best to be a good citizen. I coach sports. I have a family. I work hard. But it doesn’t matter. If there is a stack of people to choose from, why pick someone with a record?”

The class is offered each week, and it introduces attendees to the most popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, and You Tube. It also explains blogging, and how using a combination of blogs and social media one can position themselves as a valued employee in any field.

The South Oakland Shelter (SOS) organizes a network of churches in the area to provide housing for homeless individuals, as well as food, care and support to help them get their lives back on track.
Elisabeth Mirer, Director of Development for SOS, was one of the people behind the organization’s new You Tube video SOS: That Could Never Be Me.
