The DIY also had three nights worth of concerts with local bands on two stages, performances by Theatre Bizarre, a Ferris Wheel, a charity dunk tank, two beer tents, and a multitude of local artists, crafters, and other small businesses represented.
“Everyone has a right to be beautiful.” That’s the main message of the new billboard on the side of Steven B’s Barber shop on Woodward. It’s called “Your Carmen Miranda Rites” and it’s a collaborative project between photographer Judy Eliyas and Performance Artist Sue Carman.
Ferndale Downtown Development Authority Communications Manager Chris Hughes did a half-hour long interview about the ARTWN project for the regional public television show Art Design, hosted by artist and curator John Sauvé.
“ARTWN is meant to really highlight and showcase the creative culture of downtown Ferndale,” said DDA Director Cristina Sheppard-Decius. “What we’re doing is installing more public art for everyone to enjoy as well as then bringing attention to our businesses and what they are doing
Representatives from Common Ground, Transgender Michigan, The Vincent Chinn Society, Michigan AIDS Coalition and other organizations took part and the stroll ended with No H8 photos taken at Affirmations.

And if the multiple galleries, murals, sculptures, festivals, and art-related stores and activities are not enough, the next two years are going to be even more full of art as the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority launches ARTWN.
Kennedy students got a special tour of Downtown Ferndale as part of learning about history from a hands-on approach. The second and third graders took a bus to the Ferndale Public Library where they did research about historic locations in Ferndale and Detroit.

It’s hard to picture Green Thumb Garden Center owner Kris Lieber donning a suit and punching a corporate clock every day, but that’s what life was like before he opened the budding garden supply business at 22963 Woodward. The 33-year-old entrepreneur used to be a clinical engineer responsible managing the Biomedical Engineering department at several hospitals for a large corporate health system.
Street Eats Wednesday was an experimental event held on March 21, 2012 in the alley behind Rust Belt Market. Mobile vendors such as Jacques Tacos, Treat Dreams, and El Guapo Grill came out to serve the thousands of people who came out to the food truck rally.
The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has been asked by City Council to give their input on having mobile food vendors in the city….The DDA is asking folks on Linked In to give their input…
“The City is making an investment in our Downtown…and the results have spoken for themselves,” said Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter when he and members of City Council voted 4-0 to lengthen the term of the TIF [Tax Increment Financing] District which allocates tax revenue to the DDA [Downtown Development Authority] for another 20 years.
Some things to look forward to for 2012 include an “art” theme to promotions, the further stabilization of finances and the potential expansion of the TIF area, and an I ♥ Downtown Ferndale campaign to include bumper stickers and viral videos.
The meeting is from 4-9 pm this coming Monday, Jan 16, 2012, a day set aside on a national level to engage in community service. It will take place at the Kulick Community Center (1201 Livernois).
