Eight of the nine Democrats plus two Republicans signed a proclamation recognizing Gay Pride in Ferndale, which was presented at the June 7, 2012 Oakland County Board of Commissioner’s meeting.
Pride planning is now under way around Southeastern Michigan as Hotter Than July and Ferndale Pride both held their first organizational meetings Feb. 23. Both groups had higher than expected turnout and anticipate growing the events this year. HTJ will hold its 17th annual event in Palmer Park beginning Tuesday, July 24 through Sunday, July 29. Ferndale Pride, now in its second year, will take place over Father’s Day weekend beginning Saturday, June 16 through Sunday, June 17.
“We were hearing from people about how meaningful it was for them to be able to celebrate prom as themselves and with whom they wanted.”
Hennen did not address any of these comments, although the majority of his fellow council members voiced their support for those who spoke for the LGBTQ+ community and the Berkley Pride Block Party on June 26th.
“So seeing the rainbow flag, and seeing people come out to something like this, is how you know that you’re not alone.”
