Ferndale Public Schools is pleased to announce a Summer 2011 in-school food service program. Working with the USDA, United Way, and the Michigan Dept. of Education, Ferndale Public Schools will be providing every child 18 years and under, a free nutritious breakfast and lunch throughout the summer.

Volunteers for the Ferndale Blues Festival were recognized at Monday night’s City Council meeting. Organizers also presented a check for $4,000 to one of the event’s benefactors, Ferndale Youth Assistance.

Planning is under way for one of the most popular grassroots events in Ferndale, the DIY Street Fair. The “DIY” stands for Do-It-Yourself, and the event brings together local artists, crafters, musicians, craft brewers and restauranteers for two days and three nights of fun Sept 16, 17, and 18, 2011.
On June 27, 2011, Affirmations announced the selection of its next Executive Director, Antonio David Garcia. Garcia, who currently serves as the Executive Director at the Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource Center, will take over for Interim CEO Kevin Howley and starts his position August 15th.
Program participants will receive a new, empty backpack in September with the first name, sex, age and clothing size of a Ferndale Head Start student, as well as a prescribed list of items to purchase. They will then have two weeks to return the backpack filled with such items as crayons and a coloring book, a reading book, toothbrush and toothpaste, underwear and sweat clothes (estimated cost of items is approximately $30 per backpack).
“Back to the Future of Downtown Ferndale” is the topic for discussion at a community open house taking place on Wednesday, June 29 from 5-8pm at Valentine Vodka at 161 Vester. The Ferndale Community Foundation has announced seven grant awards for 2011. The awards go to groups and efforts that make the community better. Dan Martin, President of the Community Foundation, presented the awards along with Treasurer Helen Weber. Since 2003 the Foundation has provided over $50,000 to local causes.

Recent action by Standard and Poors to review the City of Ferndale’s financial position has resulted in their affirming the City’s A+ rating and provided the City with a “stable outlook.” This comes after the recent successful millage vote and at a time when the State has further cut back the statutory revenue sharing and declining property values.
