As the City of Ferndale approaches its 85th anniversary, a new commemorative poster showcases the fun mix of people and places that make Ferndale such a great place to live and do business.
Ferndale City Council will be holding a special City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 7:00pm to discuss the power outage that occurred from July 20 to July 23, 2011. “This will be an opportunity for DTE to discuss what occurred over the summer and address the concerns our residents have,” said Mayor Dave Coulter. “Residents have been frustrated with the recent power outages and want answers.”
The Munitrix system will help meet the State’s requirements for increased transparency. “The intent here is to insure that the municipalities give access to communities and their residents exactly where their finances stand,” McGrath said.
The South Oakland Shelter (SOS) organizes a network of churches in the area to provide housing for homeless individuals, as well as food, care and support to help them get their lives back on track.

This weekend is the Funky Ferndale Art Fair in Downtown Ferndale. This juried competition brings in artists from around the state and even other parts of the country. The City of Ferndale Planning Commission voted unanimously to send a recommendation to council. The recommendation includes a permitting process and several stipulations, like that structures must be made out of durable materials and that a homeowner must pass a site inspection before receiving a permit. Coops could only be in the backyard and they must have all feed in sealed containers to discourage rodents.
Kaucheck shared information with Council and residents about fracking, which is a practice of drilling into the earth and pumping the ground full of high pressure water and chemicals in order to force up natural gas.
On September 16, 17 & 18 Downtown Ferndale will be full of art, music and energy as thousands will flock to the city for the DIY Streetfair and the Funky Ferndale Art Fair.
Camp Casey Fest is set to rock downtown Ferndale on Saturday, October 15, 2011, with 12 hours of live music capped off by a headlining performance by Josh Gracin.
Though she’s only been at the helm less than two months, McGrath has already faced some interesting challenges – including damaging storms with power outages and navigating the State of Michigan’s new policies for revenue sharing.
“It’s going to be a couple hours at least before they get out here and get down to the problem,” the fireman said. “They’ll probably be working at it into the night.” He said that he expects the street to re-open by morning.
I would encourage anyone who is interested in either the DIY Street Fair or joining the Ferndale Time Bank to look into volunteering during the event.
“Once the Board has a chance to have their meeting we will know more about how this will work. It’s a new kind of group and we’ve never done anything like this before.
