When Angela Counts went to the emergency room with chest pain last May, she was 35 years old with no medical insurance. Although she said she “knew” something serious wrong, getting doctors to take her seriously was just the first of many uphill battles for the young mother of three.

Earlier this week, Fire Marshal Brian Batten presented Ferndale resident Terry Bowlus an award of $2,000 from the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee for his testimony that led to the conviction of an arsonist.

Scott Moloney, owner of Treat Dreams in Ferndale, and the Childrens Leukemia Foundation of Michigan have put together a fabulous program that started a few weeks ago and runs through this weekend: Treat Dreams is selling cupcakes and flavors of ice cream created by two young patients, donating $1.00 from each sale to CLF.

Ferndale Resident Robert Sinclair has filed a recall petitions against four members of City Council, for what he says is “financial mismanagement.” The petitions said only that, and gave no further details or explanations.

On Thursday, February 24, 2011, guests will enjoy a taste of Ireland with performances by dance groups The Leim Irish Dancers (Ferndale High School Alumni) and The Ardan Academy of Irish Dance, and musical groups Bill Grogan’s Goat and Seacht.

A pilot energy savings program has wrapped up in a Ferndale test neighborhood, with 20% of the eligible homeowners taking advantage of grant-funded home upgrades. Homes located W. 9 Mile Road to Pearson and Pinecrest to Allen were eligible to participate.

Last week, Gov. Rick Snyder met with both chambers of the Michigan Legislature to announce massive cuts to our cities, schools and our most vulnerable citizens. I am against this budget proposal — which would give more than $1 billion in tax credits to the business community while unfairly cutting benefits to our seniors — because it unfairly imposes the burden on those that need our help the most: children, seniors and the working poor.

Palmer is one of a dozen citizens who serve on the Board of the Community Foundation as they prepare for their grand annual fundraising spectacular The Taste of Ferndale. The taste-fest takes place on March 8, 2011 from 6-9pm at Via Nove Restaurant. Tickets are $30 and include samples from many local businesses, live music from The Metro Jazz Voices, and a large silent auction. The event is presented this year by Garden Fresh Gourmet
