Ferndale Pride 2011 Planning Committee Going Strong

The Ferndale Pride 2011 Planning Committee is in full swing as over 20 volunteers gathered last week to flesh out details of the three day celebration. From June 3-5 Ferndale will be host to many LGBT community events designed to complement the Motor City Pride Celebration taking place in Hart Plaza. Shuttles will run between the two events.

Allies a Part of Transgender Empowerment Day

The transgender community came out in force on Saturday for the third annual Transgender Empowerment Day, held at Affirmations and organized by Transgender Detroit and Transgender Michigan. Various inclusive groups set up informational tables and presentations were done by the Department of Justice, a panel of transgender allies, and a transgender town hall meeting.

John F. Kennedy Green School Profile

The State of Michigan began Green School certification as a grassroots initiative at Hartland High School in Livingston County in 2005. This effort resulted in Governor Jennifer Granholm signing Public Act 146 into law in May of 2006. John F. Kennedy Green School Committee was founded in 2008 by a group of parents, staff and students who wanted to see John F. Kennedy Elementary become a certified Michigan Green School. Kennedy Elementary achieved Green School status that year, and has every year since then.

3rd Annual Ferndale Green Week (April 16-22)

In cooperation with the Ferndale DDA, the Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission (FESC) presents the 3rd Annual Ferndale Green Week – A week-long environmental celebration in Ferndale!

Green Week runs Saturday April 16th to Earth Day April 22, 2011, with events in Ferndale every day!

The Book of Lost Things was originally rejected by a publisher because they disliked the description of Little Red Riding Hood being intimate with The Big Bad Wolf.

Author John Connolly read the controversial passage to a room full of fans at the Ferndale Public Library’s Author Talk held March 29, 2011. The talk was part of a month-long celebration of reading that is becoming a Ferndale Library Tradition.

Ferndale Artist’s Granholm Painting Soon to be Revealed at Capitol

Of all the artists in the State who submitted their work, it was Ferndale artist Charles Pompilius who was selected by former Governor Jennifer Granholm to paint her portrait to hang in the State Capitol. The painting will be unveiled on May 6 in a special ceremony in Lansing.

Ferndale Wrestling Club Sends 11 to State Championships

Eleven Ferndale Wrestling Club athletes traveled to Battle Creek March 25-27, 2011 to compete in the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association State Championships. The club is for boys aged 4-16 from Ferndale and surrounding cities, with 45 kids on the team this year.
