Celebrate a Day of Books and Roses

April 21st 2012

Friends of the Ferndale Library and The Society of Sant Jordi invite the public to enjoy a full day of cultural festivities. Admission is $5 and includes a complimentary rose and used book from the Friends of Ferndale Library bookstore. Kids 12 and under are free. Proceeds from the event will go directly to the Library for community programs.

How You Can Help Clean Ferndale Up on May 12

Planning is still in the works, and new ideas are most welcome. Some of the choices so far include flower planting at Grant and Ferndale Middle School, grounds cleaning at Coolidge, trash pickup on 8 Mile, Hilton, Woodward and Livernois, and helping to clean up a County-owned vacant property.

City of Ferndale to hold week-long earth celebration

The Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission and the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority are combining efforts with that of the local business community to host the 4th annual Ferndale Green Week. The week of events are an opportunity for residents to not only celebrate Earth Day 2012 but also get to know some local businesses that are doing their part to help celebrate the earth year-round.

Charity of Choice: Robotics Team Needs $3,000

The cost to for the 20-member team to go to State Finals is $5,000. They’re still short $3,000 so The Ferndale 115 News is among those helping to raise funds.

Miriam Gershow Visits Ferndale Public Library

April 4th 2012

If Miriam Gershow made a bumper sticker it would say “Fiction Saves Lives.” The Berkley High graduate is the author of The Local News, a story about a teenager whose older brother went missing and how it affected her and her family. Gershow, who now lives in Oregon, came back to Michigan to do a reading from the novel at The Ferndale Public Library as part of their Ferndale Reads celebration.

Original Work Found in Library Storage Room

The painting—created as an illustration for The Story of Hiawatha–is gouache on illustration board. Room was left in the lower right corner for text, which was written by Allen Chaffee as a retelling of the famous Longfellow poem. Published in 1951, The Story of Hiawatha features Sperry’s illustrations throughout and is currently out of print, though two copies remain in circulation at the Ferndale Public Library.

Voters Left Out in County Politics

Oakland County residents are losing representation as a coordinated Republican effort to gain control of the redistricting process has succeeded. The Commission will be cut from 25 Commissioners to 21, and control over drawing the districts has been taken from the apportionment committee and handed to the representatives themselves.

HEALTH ALERT: Mosquito Season Arrives Early in Michigan

Oakland County Health Division urges residents to take preventive measures now to keep the mosquito population low this season and help prevent West Nile Virus (WNV) or other mosquito-borne diseases because mosquitoes have arrived early this year.
