Traffic Study Done, Recommendations Presented & Accepted

TIA presented the results of those studies, along with others for Nine and Woodward and also West Nine Mile, at the Dec. 12, 2011 City Council Meeting. Based on TIA’s findings, the DDA is recommending the following:

Fewer Polling Places to Save the City Money

Ferndale City Clerk Cherilynn Tallman presented a plan to City Council on Dec. 12, 2011 which will save the city money by reducing the number of precincts from 9 to 7. This falls within the rules established by Michigan Election Law. Tallman explained the process, the benefits and the results in a request for Council action, which reads:

SMART Bus Changes May Affect Ferndale Travelers

SMART Bus riders face shortened routes and hours of operation for several routes due to budget cuts in the public transportation system. Those who take the 450/460 routes on Woodward Avenue will no longer be able to use SMART to travel into Detroit except during peak hours. Peak hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The route also does not go into Detroit on Saturdays and Sundays. Instead riders will have to transfer to DDOT (Detroit Department of Transportation) busses at the State Fair Grounds transfer center.

Ferndale Ice Festival Is On

The annual Ice Festival is on and the fun just keeps growing. Santa arrived this morning by firetruck, and was joined by two of his reindeer. Fire at Chazzano Coffee

The Ferndale Fire Department confirms that there was a small a fire at Chazzano Coffee at 1737 E 9 Mile. Details are not yet available, but owner Frank Lanzkron-Tamarazo posted on the company’s Facebook Page “Friends, we had a fire, just a few hours ago Chazzano Coffee Roasters and we will be closed until I have further information. Everyone is okay- the building is fine. I’m just not sure about the roaster, yet. I’ll keep everyone updated.-Frank.”

When getting ready to deck your halls, don’t forget about Fire Safety. Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan says that the biggest worry for the FFD come Christmastime is people who aren’t careful with their decorations.

State House Passes Unusually Specific Redistricting Bill

The State House of Representatives passed HB 5187 today. If the bill progresses through the Senate and is signed by the Governor, it would cap the number of County Commissioners in any county to 21. It would also take away the authority of the current body to draw the new district lines. If passed, Oakland County would then have 30 days to jettison four elected officials and re-draw the District lines.

Town Hall to Discuss Heating Assistance Funding

State Rep Ellen Cogen Lipton will be hosting a town hall meeting to discuss changes to home heating assistance programs on Friday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) in Ferndale. She and Congressman Sander Levin (D-Royal Oak) and Gilda Jacobs, President and CEO of the Michigan League for Human Services will be on hand to talk about these programs and proposed changes at the State level that will affect funding.
