The Jan. 9, 2012 Ferndale City Council meeting was packed with those wanting to see their elected officials get sworn in from their victories in November. Mayor Dave Coulter, who had been appointed by City Council for a partial first term when former Mayor Craig Covey was elected to County Commissioner, had his second swearing in by The Honorable Judge Joseph Longo.

After months of deliberating, Project Coordinator Darlene Hellenberg has finally settled on the gripping tale of a missing boy told through the eyes of his teenage sister. “I wanted a book with a strong female lead,” says Hellenberg. “Lydia is definitely a compelling character. The fact that the story is set in Michigan is an added bonus.”

Royal Oak Family Dentistry is hosting a Give Kids a Smile event on Feb. 11, 2012 in partnership with the American dental Association. Youngsters aged 3-17 can have their teeth checked up, cleaned and possibly some restorative work at no cost.

This month’s Charity is Ferndale Soup. The premise of Ferndale Soup is simple. On the third Sunday of each month, a bunch of people get together and each pay $5 to enjoy some soup (and other delicious food) and listen to presentations about projects that people would like to start. Then they vote on which project gets to take home the funding.

One of the two has been released pending further investigation. Another remains in custody and is suspected of being the gunman in the incident.

The Bud Light Ferndale Blues & Music Festival will be bigger and better this year, and one show will trump them all in terms of the sheer volume of musical talent in one place.
The Bridge Project and the Grosse Pointe Jazz Band, each with over 15 members, will showcase big band jazz at its finest at the Ferndale Elks Club (22856 Woodward Ave) on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 from 7-9 pm as part of the City-wide festival.

On January 21, 2012, Ferndale had it’s first beautiful sunny day with snow on the ground this year. Neighbors came together at the hill at Martin Road Park for some good old fashioned sledding. Here are some pictures.

Here’s how it works: People go to the big tent set up in the parking lot between Dino’s and the Library, pay $10, and sample ribs from eight different teams. Then they vote on which they like the best. The money raised goes to support the Michigan AIDS Coalition and the Ferndale Youth Assistance. The Burn Out takes place Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 starting at noon and rocking on past sunset.
