Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan hopes to get about 30 volunteers to start. An initial organizational meeting will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Fire Station 1 (1635 Livernois) at 10 am.

Last summer’s chicken coop discussions are finally coming to a vote at Monday night’s City Council meeting. A proposed regulation change would allow residents to keep up to three chickens if they follow basic rules of care. Currently chickens are not expressly prohibited, but rules about the placement of coops mean that very few residents would qualify to build a coop on their property.

On Feb 28, 2012 voters will be asked to vote for a millage that would extend the current millage rate of 7 mills in order to raise money for infrastructure improvements in the Ferndale School District. Currently the bond is set to expire in 2023, but if approved it would extend taxpayer’s obligation to 2033. The money would be used to eliminate asbestos in school buildings, repair heating systems, upgrade wiring and other technological needs, pool repairs and other repairs.

The premise is simple. A bunch of people get together and each pay $5 to enjoy some soup (and other delicious food) and listen to presentations about projects that people would like to start. Then they vote on which project gets to take home the funding.

Shortly after the chase ended, a Hazel Park officer saw the pick-up at a gas station in Hazel Park; it was now driven by a woman. Officers approached her and she told them it was her husband who fled from the police.

A man has been arrested for the bank robbery that occurred in Ferndale at the Charter One bank on December 6, 2011. John Lee WESTPFAHL (w/m, 44 yrs, former Warren resident) was arrested Monday morning (January 2nd). Westpfahl is suspected of committing the Ferndale bank robbery as well as two bank robberies in Birmingham and another bank robbery in Clinton Township.

The new year is off to a great start recycling-wise as SOCRRA (Southeast Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority) is working with a record number of Ferndale businesses and increasing revenue brought into the City through recycling programs.
Colette Farris spent the last two months of 2011 amping up efforts to reach the business community.
