Pride planning is now under way around Southeastern Michigan as Hotter Than July and Ferndale Pride both held their first organizational meetings Feb. 23. Both groups had higher than expected turnout and anticipate growing the events this year. HTJ will hold its 17th annual event in Palmer Park beginning Tuesday, July 24 through Sunday, July 29. Ferndale Pride, now in its second year, will take place over Father’s Day weekend beginning Saturday, June 16 through Sunday, June 17.

The Ferndale Reads 2012 Kick Off took place on Feb. 16 with local dignitaries on hand to do a reading of the first chapter. Councilperson Melanie Piana, Ferndale Area Chamber Executive Director Jennifer Roosenberg, FernCare President Ann Heler, and Treat Dreams Dreamologist Scott Moloney joined Library Director Kate Pohjola in the reading. Then dozens of people picked up free copies of the book.

On Fri., Mar. 2, 2012 The Ferndale Public Library (222 E. 9 Mile) places itself firmly in the loud camp as it showcases two local bands, Elemental and Bastion as part of its monthly First Stop Friday concert series. This concert is free and all ages are welcome.

Early numbers indicate that voters in the Ferndale School District approved a $22,825,000 bond in Tuesday’s election. This means that most residents will continue paying around the same amount in taxes that they used to and the schools get money to improve facilities.
