Councilperson Melanie Piana, who is the council liaison to the Planning Commission, was the only “no” vote, arguing that current zoning is sufficient and pointing out the irony of In-Flight, a similar store located in Oak Park, being about 200 feet from a Ferndale church already. In-Flight and Apostolic Faith Tabernacle have peacefully co-existed since In-Flight opened in 2005.

The Ferndale Seniors have made their mark at the Kulick Community Center, the beloved place where many of their meetings and events are held. Earlier this month the group of active older citizens decided to bring the center into the 21st century with a digital welcome sign.

Local artists and photographers seeking to make fresh connections with the community in vibrant, lively spaces will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Ferndale Public Library in its first group exhibition this coming September. This event began 16 years ago with 36 people walking to the half dozen bars in downtown Ferndale. Created then by a group called FANS of Ferndale, the event grew every year with more people and more clubs and venues, as the renaissance of Ferndale took place. This year the crowds will visit 22 establishments. All funds raised go to four local tax-deductible charities, including the Ferndale Police Auxiliary, FernCare, Ferndale Community Foundation, and the Michigan AIDS Coalition.

None of this stuff was any new to the participants, but giving them an opportunity to discuss it with changings faces at the tables should help them broach these kinds of conversations with others in the community.

All three candidates attended at Candidate Forum held by the League of Women Voters on July 12th. The forum took place in Ferndale City Hall, where candidates were asked about a variety of topics important to local residents, including mass transit, medical marijuana prosecution, budgeting, diversity, jails, seniors, online accessibility, and financial priorities.
