Ignite Detroit And The Lessons Learned There

Well to give you a little background, Ignite is a speaking forum event that began in Seattle and has slowly made it’s way around the country. It features various speakers from all walks of life and they give a speech. Some are hilarious, others are quite serious. They have 5 minutes featuring 20 PowerPoint-like slides that switch every 15 seconds so it really keeps the speaker alert. This was the second year for the Ignite event in Detroit… and I almost didn’t go.

Ferndale Rotary’s Spaghetti Dinner

As three-year-old Aiden Boyd and his 17-month-old brother Brock stuffed their adorable little faces full of spaghetti, they also looked around the room in amazement. Senator Gregory Visits Ferndale Public Library

14th District State Senator Vincent Gregory, who is from Southfield but represents Ferndale and other neighboring communities, visited the Ferndale Public Library on Thursday, April 14, 2011 to meet with constituents to discuss the State budget and other concerns. Tomiko Gumbleton, Ferndale City Councilperson and current aide to State Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton, was also on hand to answer questions. A handful of interested residents turned out to meet with the Senator.

Ferndale Police Union Agrees to Concessions

A three-year contract with the Ferndale Patrol Officers that calls for major concessions in health care and fringe benefits was ratified by the Ferndale City Council Wednesday evening. “This is a significant agreement that will have a huge impact on our ability to keep officers on the street within the very difficult financial constraints faced by the City,” said Mayor Dave Coulter.

Budget Meeting #4, Part One: Court

Ferndale City Council had its fourth budget planning session on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. They heard presentations from the District Court, the Police Department and the Fire Department. Each department presented a slideshow describing what their legally-mandated responsibilities are and presenting budgets reflecting cuts of 15% and 20%.

Fire Destroys Over 50% of Home

A fire occurred at approximately 6:30pm in the 600 block of Livernois. According to Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan the fire began in the kitchen.

New Fire Truck Arrives Safely

On Monday, April 11, 2011, Ferndale City Council approved the purchase of a new aerial fire truck. On Wednesday the engine arrived safely and firefighters were able to begin testing it out.

Dyke March Steps up for a Second Year (June 4)

April 12th 2011

Between 250-300 people came to the inaugural march, which moved down W. 9 Mile through Downtown Ferndale, and finally ended with a rally in Geary Park. This year’s march will take place June 4, 2011 at 2pm, following last year’s course.

Chamber Hosts Headlee Forum

The Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce held a forum for business owners and residents to discuss Proposal A. Representatives from local and County government were there, as well as a representative from each of the citizens campaigns. Dennis Whittie spoke on behalf of Yes to Ferndale’s Future. Sean House represented FACT (Ferndale Against Council’s Tax).

Eggstravaganza 2011

Despite the rainy weather families turned out to Martin Road Park on April 9, 2011 for the Ferndale Recreation’s Annual Eggstravaganza. Youngsters were divided into age-appropriate groups and let loose on a park full of candy-filled plastic eggs.
