Take Precautions During Cold Weather

“While anyone can be affected by extreme cold, infants and elderly are particularly at risk, as are people with diabetes because of impaired circulation,” said Kathy Forzley, Health Division manager/health officer. “Proper precautions need to be taken to avoid serious health problems caused by cold weather.”

FernCare has updated their list of places where people can get health care and other assistance. Currently the Ferndale-based free health clinic is operating at capacity and is not accepting new clients at this time. Ferndale Public Library to Begin Using Collection Agency

This new policy was developed with fairness to all library patrons in mind. Materials not returned are not available for others to use or borrow. Also, if materials are not returned, in most cases, money from the library budget is used to replace them. This same money could much better be used to purchase new items for patron use instead of replacing non-returned items.

UHS DECA Collecting Jeans for Homeless Youth Jan. 26

Students from the University High School DECA program are asking that people bring a pair of jeans with them to the Extravaganza on Saturday, Jan. 26, to be donated to homeless youth.

The jeans collection is part of the Teens for Jeans movement organized through in partnership with clothing retailer Aeropostale. People who bring a pair of gently used jeans to donate not only can feel good about helping homeless youth, they will also get a 25% off coupon for their next Aeropostale purchase.

Teachers Can Register for Active Shooter Training through County

Experts from Oakland County Homeland Security Division and the Sheriff’s Office will conduct five training sessions for school personnel on how to react in an active shooter situation in January and February.

“Dec. 14, 2012 is emblazoned on our memories forever,” Patterson said. “Many died in the Newtown, Conn. tragedy. But many others survived because teachers knew just what to do with a shooter in the building.”

University High School Info Session Jan. 23

UHS was founded in 2005 in a partnership with Lawrence Technological University that provides on-campus and dual enrollment opportunities for UHS students.
