Spring is right around the corner, and ReLeaf Michigan is excited to get out and start planting trees!
The contest, which awards participants for identifying the biggest trees in Michigan, began in the spring of 2020 and concluded at the end of the summer of 2022.
Certificates and prizes are awarded for the largest tree submitted from each county, for the overall largest tree in different age groups, and for the largest White Pine (Michigan’s state tree).

The group is based in Ann Arbor, but has planted trees in many local communities, including Oak Park, Royal Oak, Rochester Hills, Novi, Pontiac, Clarkston, Lake Orion and others.

This year, a total of $100,000 is available in 1-to-1 matching grants of up to $4,000. Apply by Friday, Aug. 18.
The DNR administers the grant program and ReLeaf Michigan provides tree planting, project coordination and technical assistance for planting projects.
Grant awards will be announced in August, and projects must be completed by May 31, 2023.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced its Community Forestry Grant Program for 2022
This class lists good and bad trees, why you should choose one tree over another. It also explains micro-climate environmental conditions. Finally, it will discuss oak wilt, a devastating disease to oak trees.
Up to $20,000 is available for projects such as:
Tree inventories and management plans.
Urban forest master plans or strategic plans.
Tree maintenance connected to strategic activities in a plan or tree inventory.
Community outreach or local staff training.
Tree ordinance review and development.
Local units of government, nonprofit organizations, tribes, and schools located within the service territory of DTE Energy are eligible to apply.
The seedlings will be placed in areas throughout the county. Cities and townships may choose to plant them on municipal properties or safely distribute them to residents and community organizations.
