June 19 – West Bloomfield Juneteenth Celebration

June 19 – West Bloomfield Juneteenth Celebration

A community-wide event commemorating Juneteenth National Freedom Day will take place Saturday, June 19, from 10 – 12 a.m. at West Bloomfield High School. Sponsored by the West Bloomfield/Lakes Area Democratic Club, the program includes storytelling, music, displays by local artists and refreshments.

A Covid-19 vaccination clinic will be open during the event for anyone age 12 and older at West Bloomfield Fire Station #1, 4601 Orchard Lake Road (next door to the high school).

Event partners include the West Bloomfield Library, West Bloomfield Parks & and Recreation, United We Walk, Road Masters Vette Club. Refreshments will be donated by Busch’s and Trader Joe’s.

Juneteenth National Freedom Day commemorates the date of the final emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. The official emancipation took place on June 19, 1885, following an announcement by Union Army General Gordon Granger in Texas. While slavery had been officially outlawed by President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, actual emancipation was delayed in many parts of the South, especially in rural areas.

West Bloomfield High School is located at 4925 Orchard Lake Rd, West Bloomfield Township, MI, 48323. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place outdoors and all State and local Covid-19 safety protocols will be followed.
