Troy Public Library Welcomes New Director Emily Dumas
(TPL, Feb. 23, 2021)
Troy, MI – The Troy Public Library is thrilled to bring Emily Dumas on board as new Library Director, beginning February 22, 2021. Dumas comes from her last position at Director at Royal Oak Public Library Director.
Dumas’ work experience in public libraries extends to Youth Services, Teen Services, Adult Services, Circulation, and even the computer lab. “I have an appreciation and respect for the important and unique roles that each and every department plays within the Library family,” Dumas said.
Dumas’ library career began in 2009, at Royal Oak Public Library, where she worked in the Circulation and Youth departments. During this time, she also worked in the Teen department for Ferndale Public Library. In 2012, she became a full-time Youth Librarian at Commerce Township Community Library. In late 2016, she returned to Royal Oak Public Library as Head of Youth & Teen Services until February 2019, when she became Library Director.
On November 3, 2020, Troy voters approved a new library millage of 1.1 mills for ten years. The new millage will allow Troy Public Library to restore seven-day service, perform building maintenance, and implement needed upgrades.
Dumas says, “I have experience managing teams during an extension of open hours, and overseeing a renovation, and look forward to such developments in the future for the Troy Public Library.”
Assistant City Manager, Robert Bruner says, “Emily is joining the Troy Public Library at an exciting time. We have big plans ahead since voters approved the new millage in November 2020. Emily is the leader we were looking for to help take TPL to the next level.”
Former Library Director Cathleen Russ served as Troy Public Library Director for 13 years before accepting the Director position at West Bloomfield Township Public Library. Her last day at Troy Public Library was November 25, 2020.
Dumas holds a master’s degree in Library & Information Science from Wayne State University with a concentration in Services for Children and Teens. She looks forward to bringing new perspective and leadership to the Director role and is eager to begin.
“My first order of business will be to build relationships,” said Dumas. “I feel that an important first step for any manager is to build relationships with the staff, and that it is also the responsibility of a Library Director to create a relationship with the community. I plan to spend many of my early days on the job listening and learning to those around me so I can best serve the City of Troy.”
