Regina Weiss to Serve as Next State Rep.for the 27th District

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 4, 2020)

Berkley, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak Township, MI –Regina Weiss had a large victory Tuesday night as she took 73.34% of the votes in a four-way race for State Rep. of the 27th District. Weiss, a Democrat, had 41,755 votes. Republican Elizabeth Goss got 12,561 (22.36%) of the votes. Libertarian Gregory Stempfle had 913 votes (1.63%), and Green Party candidate Sherry Wells had 886 (1.58%).

Weiss is currently on Oak Park City Council, and will resign to serve in the State Legislature.  Professionally her background is as a teacher.

In her 2020 election interview, Weiss said education and municipal finance were motivators for her to run for office.  “There are a number of issues that exist in the state,” she added, referencing tax fairness and the desire for a graduate income tax, addressing systemic racism, and environmental protection.

She referenced the “green slime” contamination in Madison Heights as a recent example.  “Some priorities I do have are improving environmental regulations in our state, making sure we’re protecting our water, that we’re protecting our air and our land,” Weiss said.  “We need to do more to hold polluters accountable and we need them to pay for any type of cleanup.”

Weiss is already learning about the position from current State Representative Robert Wittenberg, who is moving on to serve as Treasurer for Oakland County after his victory Tuesday night.
