Reporter Food: Old Port Family Restaurant in Clawson

Clawson, MI – It’s easy to spot Old Port Family Restaurant in Downtown Clawson by the giant American flag banner on the roof and the decorations celebrating patriotism. The banner still reads “Happy 4th of July from Old Port Diner Clawson. Thank you to our veterans. God Bless America.”

The family restaurant feels as if it’s been there forever, and it’s clear that the place has plenty of regulars as the servers cheerfully called them by their names.  There are lots of big comfy booths, with even more space with booths blocked off for social distancing.

I got the breaded veal cutlet sandwich which had two crispy pieces placed atop white bread, heaped with mashed potatoes and brown gravy.  This was served with a simple side salad and a scoop of canned corn – nice, basic comfort food.

My friend had the fisherman’s platter with multiple fish, including jumbo shrimp and cod, all coated in thick crispy golden batter.  This was served with french fries, tarter sauce, and a cup of soup.  He picked the split pea with ham.

The menu is several pages long, and includes items like the roast beef dinner, spaghetti and meat sauce, club sandwich, stuffed grape leaves, and a page that lists the various types of fish. There’s also a full menu of breakfast favorites like omelettes, stead and eggs, pancakes and skillets.

While they do not have a website that we could find, their menu can be found in the photos of the Old Port Family Restaurant Facebook page. Or check it out in person at 278 E. 14 Mile Road in Downtown Clawson.
