Best Zinnia Blossom Winner Shares Love of Ferndale Garden Club
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 17, 2020)
Ferndale, MI – This is the third year that the Ferndale Garden Club hosted their annual Zinnia Bloom contest, featuring the brightest, biggest, and best of the club’s official flower.
Beth D’Anna’s blossom was deemed the lovliest, earning her a blue ribbon. Carol Olson of Oak Park took second place, with third going to Kirsten Suer. The quaint celebration gave Garden Club members a chance to meet in person and talk about a topic they love – with facemasks on of course.
“What I enjoy most about our Garden Club (which turns 90 this year) is the knowledge gained and shared by a cross generational group of community members. Additionally, the Club provides an interesting and informative program schedule so we are always learning while getting to know our neighbors,” D’Anna said.
She and Garden Club President Dominic Scappaticci share an appreciation for the flowers, not only because of their beauty, but because of their accessibility. “The Zinnia is one of the easiest flowers to grow from seed, so it appeals to the novice gardener as well as the expert gardener. Children and adults find this flower easy to grow. Also, zinnias attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to the garden and bloom all summer long. And they are just so cheerful!” he said.
“The glory of zinnias is that you can direct sow them and then walk away,” D’Anna said. “As long as you water regularly you receive a bountiful supply of cheery colorful blooms that carry you into the fall season. When most perennials are done blooming and annuals are becoming tired out you still have a gorgeous garden display.”
The Garden Club not only helps connect people with a love of gardening, they also fundraise for a local scholarship, they have lectures during the cooler months, and they take care of the pocket park at Livernois and Oakridge.
Annual mum sale fundraiser is September 19. 10am-2pm at Kulick and 12-3 library. Helps raise funds for scholarship, public programs and more.
