Construction Site Fires Set by Man Police Say Was Trying to Keep Warm

(Ferndale Police, May 15, 2020)

Ferndale, MI – On May 11, 2020 at approximately 1:00 p.m. Ferndale Police responded to Parkdale Townes to investigate an arson. Parkdale Townes is a town home community under construction in the southwest section of Ferndale.

Overnight a suspect entered an unoccupied multi-unit townhouse that was under construction and started three small fires that we believe self extinguished. The damage was discovered by construction workers the next morning. Ferndale detectives quickly identified the suspect and arrested him on May 13, 2020.

David Hayes, 34, of Ferndale was arraigned by 43rd District Court Magistrate Brennan on a single charge of third degree arson. Hayes was given a $100,000 cash or surety bond and is scheduled to appear on May 28 at 1:00 pm.

Update: In response to Oakland County Times inquiry, police added: The suspect is known to us from previous police contacts. It appears he was looking for a place to stay for the night and started the fires to stay warm.  Also, police confirmed that the suspect’s eyebrow tattoos say “White Pride.”
