Troy Firefighters Use Jaws of Life to Save Woman Trapped in Car on I-75
The Troy Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle extrication at the scene of a traffic crash involving a rolled over vehicle on Northbound I-75, north of 14 Mile Road at 7:44am on Monday March 16. Due to the location being potentially restricted by construction on I-75, an additional station was dispatched to provide support. Troy Police were asked by firefighters to close northbound I-75 to assist with incident scene access. Upon arrival, firefighters found a Chevrolet Volt on its side, with one occupant still inside. A quick survey of the incident scene revealed only one vehicle was involved, impacting the guardrail and only the driver needed to be extricated.
Firefighters and paramedics from Alliance Mobile Health further determined that due to the patient’s potential injuries, and the way she was entangled, the removal process would be lengthy.
Firefighters used Hurst Hydraulic tools (Jaws of Life and hydraulic cutters) to remove the roof of the vehicle. Stabilization posts were needed to steady the vehicle while crews worked to disentangle the lone occupant. Firefighters and paramedics were at the scene for approximately one hour.
Once removed, the patient was treated by Alliance Mobile Health and transported to a local hospital. Her condition is not known. Troy Police are investigating the accident and its cause. No other injuries or fatalities were reported.
