Reporter Food: Coconut Chicken Salad at South Lyon Hotel

South Lyon, MI- For this Reporter Food column I stumbled upon something unusual and delicious at the South Lyon Hotel: Coconut Chicken Salad.

This cheerful, filling, sweet and savory salad was made with mixed greens, coconut breaded chicken strips, Mandarin oranges, pineapple, strawberries and toasted almonds with a house-made piña colada dressing. And while I suppose fruit does appear sporadically in salads, this one was so full of the sweet, vitamin-rich bites of nature’s candy that it also made the healthy greens and hearty protein stand out in perfect balance.  I can definitely see ordering this again.

I was at the South Lyon Hotel with two friends.  One had the classic cheeseburger, served open-faced with lettuce, tomato, and slices of pickle and a heaping side of thick-cut golden fries.

My other friend had the fish and chips, also piled high with french fries along with beer-battered cod, a cup of cole slaw, and a cup of tarter sauce to dip the thick bites of fillet in.

Other menu items include the Bonsi Turkey Burget, Irish Nachos, New Orleans Pasta, and Fried Green Tomato BLT. There are also options for burgers, pizzas, and more salads.

The South Lyon Hotel is located at 201 N. Lafayette Street in South Lyon. While the historic 1860s building is gone, the hotel recently re-opened as the modern, two-story eatery.
