Nov. 4 – Public Can Review SMART’s New Plan at Meeting in Southfield

Southfield, MI- After an 18-month system analysis and outreach effort, SMART will present a proposed long-term plan for improvements to its public transportation services to the public.

As part of the SMART Path initiative, SMART has explored ways to maximize user benefit, optimize taxpayer dollars, and improve the efficiency of its suburban route network. Proposed solutions include expansion of SMART’s popular FAST routes, more direct routes, increased frequency and weekend service, and pilot projects using new technologies to connect people more effectively.  Despite a national trend of declining ridership, SMART has increased ridership by 19% system-wide and 56% on the FAST corridors, since the launch of FAST.

Proposed plan details can be found at

“SMART has talked with over 4,300 people to get their ideas about improvements that will be effective and efficient,” said John C. Hertel, General Manager of SMART.   “Now, we have a proposed long term plan and want to make sure the changes will best serve our riders and the region well into the future.”
