Nov. 3- Yoga Book Club at Ferndale Library

Ferndale, MI -There may be a lot of options for Yoga classes around the Metro area, but there’s less chance of finding an exciting new book club. This fall, local yoga instructor Meaghan Nash is inviting you to mark your calendars for Sunday, November 3. That’s when she’ll be leading a free 1-hour class at the Ferndale Library that will segue directly into a book discussion. Those planning to attend the free class and club should read On Being Human by Jennifer Pastiloff, the selection for the November 3 meeting.

Practitioners of Yoga often report experiencing a sense of bliss, or a kind of grounded serenity, after an extensive class. This leads to a state of mind similar to a “runner’s high,” where the endorphins surge, and their anxiety has drained away. Nash said that this can instill a sense of natural loquaciousness or a talkative state, in the typical yoga student. In fact, she noticed that perfect strangers would begin engaging in friendly conversation after her classes. So, Nash figured: why not provide a focal topic for that post-yoga class confab!?

Pastiloff’s new memoir details her experience of becoming a yoga teacher after 13 years waitressing, working to overcome depression, hopelessness, and anxiety. “With harrowing vulnerability and badass candor, Jen Pastiloff has written a gritty and passionate memoir,” said author Elizabeth Gilbert. Nash, meanwhile, is eager to share the inspiration that followed the reading of this book; she completed her training back in 2007 and has been teaching yoga ever since.

A limited amount of copies are going to be available at the Ferndale Library, but patrons of neighboring libraries such as Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Oak Park, Hazel Park, and Berkley, can also request a copy from their home library. Nash said she is looking forward to a book-club-style conversation to channel all of the calm-yet-energized thoughts that naturally follow a yoga class. No registration is required, but it will be necessary to have read the book before arriving. The library’s Community Room is carpeted; attendees will need to bring a mat, towel, or small blanket, and dress for flexibility.
