Fire at Troy Beaumont Leaves Patient Severely Burned

(Troy Fire Dept, Oct. 15, 2019)

Troy, MI- The Troy Fire Department received a call from the security office at William Beaumont Hospital at 44201 Dequindre reporting a fire in one of the rooms located in the Emergency Center (EC) at 10:11pm. They were reporting visible smoke and a sprinkler activation. They were working to evacuate the area. Wm. Beaumont hospital is a large, 7-story, high-rise medical building. The EC is located on the 1st floor. The initial assignment included: Engine 5, Ladder 5, Engine 2, Ladder 2, Rescue 4, Air Tender 3 and Alliance Mobile Health (EMS Provider).

The EC was busy at the time of the call, with patients in various stages of distress. Fire protection systems are installed to separate the EC from the rest of the hospital and contain any smoke and fire. Upon arrival, the fire department reported smoke in the EC, but the fire was reported to be out. Fire suppression sprinklers were active. The patients in the area had been relocated by WBH staff.

Once firefighters confirmed the fire was out, the sprinklers were turned off. Crews assisted WBH to remove the sprinkler water from the area. One patient received 1st and 2nd degree burns over 30% of her body as a result of the fire.  She was transferred to another facility to continue her treatment. Her condition is not known at this time.

Fire Investigators are continuing their investigation and have listed this fire as suspicious. Damage estimates are incomplete. But at this time, the EC is open for business and accepting patients.

No further details are available at this time.
