Superheroes at FEF Dinner Support Grants for Ferndale Teachers
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 23, 2019)
Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Oak Park, Royal Oak Township, MI – With two Ruth Ginsbergs, a couple of Thors, and a female Stan Lee, the Ferndale Education Foundation (FEF) annual gala was full of super power.
And while there were many fun costumes, the real power in the room came from the generosity of the attendees. Twenty teachers were awarded mini-grants at this year’s event. The grants reach every school building and cover a range of student and teacher needs.
Lauren Carp, for example, is receiving a grant to purchase a buzzer system so she can orchestrate games in her upper elementary classroom to increase competitiveness and engagement.
Diyana Sarafou of the Tri County Educational Center put in her grant application for English as a Second Language (ESL) activity books and downloads for American songs in native languages.
At University High School, Sosha Hayness plans to use her grant money to create a “Mood Meter” corner with seating and décor to help students regulate emotions.
And in Ferndale High School, Aaron Blatt will be purchasing kits so students can participate in Dungeons and Dragons.
The FEF event featured not only superheroes, but also a drag queen. The fabulous Sabin was there to assist guests with spending their money, being both a comedian and an auctioneer. Items included professional family portrait packages, sports games, travel opportunities, and even some more personal ones, like having the Ferndale School Board prepare a family dinner or National Honor Society Students doing yardwork.
The event raised over $15,000 which pays for teacher grants and tutoring. Learn more about Ferndale Education Foundation at their website.
