Sept. 26 – Presentation on Read by Grade Three Law by Ferndale Schools

FERNDALE, MI – Ferndale Schools Superintendent Dania Bazzi and Assistant Superintendant Dina Rocheleau will be at Ferndale Area District Library to answer your questions about Michigan’s new Grade By 3 Law, talking to parents about what it means for their students.

This event is presented in partnership with the Ferndale Area District Library, and features a lively, interactive storytime session with professional storyteller/performer Genot Picor. Light refreshments and snacks will be served, and the Superintendents will be taking questions after their presentation.

Passed by the Michigan legislature and signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder in 2016, the new Read By Grade 3 law took effect at the start of this 2019-2020 school year, and it has left many parents with more questions than answers.  According to the Michigan Education Association, “When the third grade reading bill was first introduced three years ago, it would have mandated retention of all students who did not test at third-grade proficiency level in reading with no exceptions, no remediation, and no teacher training included. Intensive lobbying by MEA and other interested groups resulted in significant improvements.”

Picor’s story performance will open the event on Thursday, September 26, with an informational discussion starting after 6pm. Since becoming a District Library five years ago, Ferndale’s librarians are now in partnership with Ferndale’s Schools and this event is an extension of that–however, beyond playing the role of hosts, the librarians will not be taking part directly in the presentation. Librarians are available to answer any questions, or direct inquiries to pertinent sources for further information. Youth Librarians can be reached at: 248-546-2504 x. 694
