Sept. 20-22 – Funky Ferndale Art Fair

Ferndale, MI-  Guests of the Funky Ferndale Art Fair may take home all manner of art, from Halloween decorations to handmade sweaters and hats. Or they may be turned into art themselves. Come see Friday, September 20 – Sunday, September 22 –featuring nearly 100 juried artists from across the country and free interactive cultural activities, this annual event promises a weekend of rarefied shopping opportunities, over-the-top artistic experiences and community building galore.

Embracing the weirder side of the art world, Funky Ferndale Art Fair proudly offers a select cross-section of unusual artwork that is not to be found at your typical outdoor art fair!  And for the first time, a team of hair art and body makeup artists have been brought in to create real-time works of human art.

Be it art that’s made of dead tarantula spiders or decorative robots made from leftover construction materials, Funky Ferndale’s goal is to push audience’s expectations about what is and is not fine art.  Always encouraging attendees to try something new, Funky Ferndale melds with the fabulous energy of Downtown Ferndale to create a fantastic weekend of fun, people watching and new experiences!

“Of course our goal is to help artists sell their art, but, we also really love this weekend in Ferndale because it’s a city that’s very close to our hearts,” says event producer Mark Loeb of Integrity Shows. “Funky Ferndale is our chance to try new things and to encourage others to do the same. That is why we are being even more inclusive of attendees this year and getting them to be part of the show.”

As mentioned, organizers have added two new activities to this year’s schedule. First, there’s the hair art demos by local rocker/designer/hair artist Marcie Bolen (The VonBondies) who will be using her notorious design skills to create one-of-a-kind hair art, which will spotlight Bolen’s signature wild styling of braiding, temporary color, add-ons and more! Bolen will be working with selected hair models outside of the DYE Salon (262 E. Nine Mike Rd., Ferndale) all weekend long. To enter to be a hair model (selected models receive a $50 gift certificate to use in any artist’s booth) – go here.

Additionally, there will be another opportunity for guests to BECOME the art! Express Yourself Body Art by Kayley Bynum will be creating live body art on various models throughout the festival. Guests are encouraged to watch the creations come to life!  If interested in being a volunteer body art model,  go here. Painting is waist up. No latex or coconut allergies. Models must be able to sit for two to four hours.

“We’re excited to bring these interactive events to the event because Funky Ferndale is one of those events that really lends itself to community involvement,” says Loeb. “The spirit of the weekend is pretty celebratory and having guests actually become works of art not only keeps things fresh, but it helps us as an event to level up and give back.”

There’s also family-friendly activities such as the mural painting. The Ferndale Arts and Cultural Commission works with local youth and professional artists to create a new mural each year – the first three are hanging on the Cupcake Station at the corner of Nine Mile and Allen in Ferndale. Volunteers can sign up to assist at the show by recruiting attendees to help paint a section of the mural. To volunteer, please click here and fill out the form.

Returning this year will be festival favorite, youth artist collective, Mint Artist Guild, poised  to spotlight some of the region’s most talented teen artists. And all-weekend-long music will be provided by violin buskers, the Mint Band (showtime TBD), Ken Mazur and the Rhythm Architect, and DJs Knifehouse, Kent Clark and Sleezy Hamilton.

Funky Ferndale Art Fair is on Nine Mile Road West of Woodward.  Use 200 West Nine Mile, Ferndale, MI for GPS.
