July 4 Garage Fire in Berkley Started Inside the Structure

(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 11, 2019)

Berkley,  MI – A July 4 garage fire on Wakefield in Berkley had neighbors speculating about the cause on social media.

While July 4 is a busy night for fireworks, that was not the cause of the fire – at least not from above.

According to City Manager Matthew Baumgarten, “The investigation ruled out fireworks falling on the garage as a cause, but it has not ruled out improper disposal or either fireworks or cigarettes.  Something was thrown into a garbage can and that garbage was placed in the garage.  At some point in the night, a fire started in the can and grew within the garage.  Public Safety was called between 12:30 and 1am when the fire made it to the exterior and was noticed by the family.

The garage was completely destroyed. Siding on the home melted, but firefighters were able to control the fire enough to keep it from spreading.
