May 29 – Guardians of Detroit Author Architecture/Sculpture Talk at Ferndale Library

FERNDALE, MI – Local author Jeff Morrison wrote an extensive love letter to the historic architecture of the Motor City, focusing on the overlooked and hidden gems of sculptural art with Guardians of Detroit. Morrison will be talking about the beauty and prestige of these works at the Ferndale Library on Wed., May 29, including a look into the research and photography featured in his book.

Attendees will not only gain a deeper appreciation for the subtle works of art sutured throughout the city’s architectural landscape, but also learn about the symbolism behind the ornamentation, and untold stories of the artists and architects involved in their creation. Morrison’s presentation runs about 90 minutes, which includes Q&A with the audience. The Guardians of Detroit book and coloring book will be available for purchase before and after the presentation.

Learn about and see a menagerie of gargoyles and other silent guardians that have been watching over the city from high above its streets and sidewalks, often unnoticed and ignored by the bustling people passing below. Morrison will talk about how Detroit went from being a small frontier fort to an expansive metropolis with a boom of rising skyscrapers and industries. Population numbers and massive new edifices were rising right alongside architectural styles like Gothic Revival and Art Deco, favoring detailed ornamentations. There are a lot of interesting characters perched upon the buildings of Detroit, come get a much closer glimpse of them on May 29, at the Ferndale Library, with Guardians of Detroit author Jeff Morrison.
