Ferndale, MI – The Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition was founded in 2013 in an effort to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding across Oakland County. As one of 25 coalitions organized under the Michigan Breastfeeding Network, the Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition partners with local community organizations, hospitals, non-profits, city and state agencies, and families to ensure all residents live and work in an environment that supports and encourages breastfeeding.

Over the last several years, the Coalition has partnered with the Oakland County Health Department to recognize employers, businesses and pediatrician offices who exemplify breastfeeding friendly practices. Previous nominations totaled over 100 throughout Oakland County.

In addition, the Coalition launched a breastfeeding support group in 2014 to provide direct service to families in and around Oakland County. The breastfeeding group is known in the community as Meet, Nurse, Love and it is held the second Monday of each month at Nature’s Playhouse in Ferndale. The partnership with Nature’s Playhouse has allowed the Coalition to offer breastfeeding support free of charge, thereby breaking down barriers to accessing skilled lactation support and providing opportunities for families to build relationships and support networks.

The Coalition encourages the entire family (including, but not limited to, fathers, partners, grandparents, and siblings) to participate in meetings. It is widely known that moms and moms-to-be will find success on their breastfeeding journeys when they feel supported and have access to resources when they need it most. More information about the Coalition can be found here.
