HAVEN Hosting Events in April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

(HAVEN, April 8, 2019)

Pontiac, MI- Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. One out of every six American women and one out every 33 American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. At HAVEN, we believe that one is too many and invite you to join us in our mission to eradicate sexual violence.

HAVEN is Oakland County’s only comprehensive organization for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, providing a 24/7 crisis line, emergency shelter, medical forensic exams, counseling, court advocacy and prevention education to more than 30,000 people each year in Oakland county and surrounding areas. Nationally recognized with 43 years of experience, HAVEN’s mission is to empower survivors to heal, and engage all individuals and communities to address and prevent sexual assault and intimate partner violence.

Every April, HAVEN recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate the community on how to prevent it. This year’s theme, I Ask, centers on consent and incorporating asking for consent as a healthy and normal part of our everyday interactions.  At HAVEN, we recognize that consent is active, based on equal power, always a choice, and an ongoing process that can be revoked at any time.

HAVEN has many opportunities this April for the community to get involved with SAAM and take part in creating a culture of consent.

April 24 is Denim Day, internationally recognized since 1999 in protest of an Italian High Court ruling to overturn a rape conviction because the 18-year old survivor was wearing jeans. You can show your support for survivors by organizing a group to wear denim and collect a donation to benefit HAVEN. To get involved or for more information, go to www.haven-oakland.org/events.

April 25,10am and 5pm, HAVEN is presenting a workshop, Uncovering Sexual Assault in Domestic Violence Calls. Expert presenter, Mike Davis, is a recently retired Sergeant of the Vancouver Police Department of Washington with 25 years’ experience in law enforcement. For more information or to register, please go to https://havensaam2019.eventbrite.com.

April 27, 2pm at Geary Park Ferndale, HAVEN is hosting our Annual March for Consent. We invite you to join us in hearing survivors creatively express their stories and marching to demand an end to sexual violence and a culture of consent. All are welcome to attend. For more information, please go to www.haven-oakland.org/events

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a chance for us to come together as a community to create the world we want to live in, a world without sexual violence. We hope you will stand with HAVEN and stand with survivors this April.
