A FAB way to help fill the gap for Ferndale Schools Fine Arts, Drawing Saturday

(Amy Butters, Ferndale Schools parent and FAB member, Feb. 1, 2019)

Ferndale, MI- When I was in college, my mom used to randomly send me a little money. I had a small income from my campus job, but she just wanted me to have a little extra, to ease the burden of those pesky expenses — laundry, Sunday dinner, postage stamps (it was the late ’80s). She labeled the envelope “mad money,” a term that for her generation meant “just in case.”

Sometimes our Ferndale Schools students need a little mad money. That’s exactly what FAB provides. When you buy a ticket for the Ferndale Schools Fine Arts Boosters (FAB) raffle on Saturday, Feb. 2, you are helping fill the gap between what our district supplies and the other needs of our programs.

Here are some recent examples of gaps that FAB has filled:

— A trailer for the orchestra program. When our students go “on the road” to summer orchestra camp or competitions at other school districts, transporting instruments is a challenge. Parents are recruited to load cellos and basses into our cars to drive behind the school buses carrying the students. It is not ideal; parents aren’t always available, and transporting expensive instruments in personal vehicles has potential insurance issues. So the orchestra families raised money to buy a trailer, and when they came close to their goal, FAB was able to make a donation and fill in the gap.

— Rain jackets for the marching band. For years, our students have excelled at regional and state competitions. So imagine the frustration when they are are in between their performances, in the bleachers watching the other competitors in all kinds of Michigan weather, and so many other bands are sporting matching, warm, water-repellent coats. Over the last few years, money has been raised to buy jackets for the Ferndale band, and FAB was able to write that last check to reach the total needed to make the purchase.

— Floor covering for the winterguard team. After the marching band season ends, winterguard season begins, in which colorguard teams perform at competitions, incorporating dance, flag and rifle skills.  Our team was revived last year and won first place in the state. This year, the students want to bring their visual presentation up a level so FAB has helped them buy a floor covering that coordinates with their show and is more impressive than a plain black floor.

— Bow ties. Concert attire for our young men includes formal jackets, that the school provides, but sometimes these busy student-musicians forget their bow ties. So FAB was happy to throw in some money for a stash of ties, so no one has to go tieless. It’s just another gap that FAB fills, helping our students look good while sharing their talents.

From a trailer to bow ties, FAB strives to ease the way for our fine arts programs, so our students and teachers can focus on learning and sharing their talents.
