Annual “ROam Home” Event to Bring Royal Oak Together, Planning Meeting Jan. 9

ROYAL OAK, Michigan – Royal Oak has always been the type of community you come home to. And community members will have an opportunity on January 9, 2019 to learn more about a new annual event that ensures there is more reason than ever to make that trek home – whether you’re still a resident or you’re now living halfway around the world. ROam Home will debut October 19-27, 2019, and will recur each year leading up to the community’s centennial celebration in 2021 and beyond. It is a homecoming for legacy residents, but it is far more than that. ROam Home will be a week in which community activity is at an all-time high. Residents who would like to learn more about the event are invited to a special informational meeting on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Royal Oak Public Library Auditorium. During ROam Home, each organization, club, group or institution within the city will be invited to create an event or outreach that fits its mission and personality – with all of it happening within the week of ROam Home. Bands will play concerts. Block clubs will hold gatherings. Service clubs may hold blood drives or clothing drives. Scouts may plant trees. The Fire Department may offer CPR training.

Two events will bookend the week. The first will be a volunteer celebration, which will provide all participating groups with the opportunity to occupy booth space and showcase their activities. The second will be the annual Spooktacular event in downtown Royal Oak, which will take place on Sunday, October 27.Each organization will be encouraged to be creative and unique. The idea is that during ROam Home week, there is more reason than ever for Royal Oak residents to get out and experience the community – and it’s the most perfect time imaginable for those who grew up in Royal Oak to come home and join in the activity. The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce is providing logistical support for ROam Home in the event’s infancy, but the plan is that ROam Home will soon operate on its own as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. ROam Home has already established its own web site at Those interested can follow progress in the planning of the event there. There’s also a newly created Face Book page dedicated to the celebration, @ROamHomeRoyalOak
