Berkley Public Input Open House for Coolidge Reconfiguration Nov. 28

Berkley, MI- The City of Berkley would like your input! Please join us on Wednesday, November 28th, for a Public Input Open House to explore reconfiguring Coolidge Highway from four to three lanes between 11 mile and 12 Mile.

Earlier this year, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) completed a comprehensive traffic analysis through the Transportation Improvement Association (TIA) to determine the benefits of re-configuring Coolidge. The new configuration would allow for a continuous turn lane, bike lanes, plus additional parallel parking on both sides of Coolidge.

This project would be striping and signage only; absolutely no construction would be involved. The DDA, which is paying for the work out of its own funds, held two previous public input sessions over the summer.

“This project would transform Coolidge Highway from a transportation highway to a local road,” DDA Executive Director Vivian Carmody said. “The economic benefits of which would be significant. Road diets are well-known to spur private investment and raise local property values.”

Berkley Public Safety and Beaumont Hospital representatives support the change, as a continuous turn lane benefits emergency vehicles by providing them with a dedicated travel lane. TIA studies show that adding a turn lane can significantly reduce rear-end accidents and side-swipe collisions.

The Public Input session is scheduled from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and will be held in the Public Safety Conference Room, 2395 Twelve Mile Road. Presentation boards with graphic displays, FAQs and other information will be set up around the room to illustrate how the project would work. Representatives from Spalding DeDecker, Hubbell, Roth & Clark, and TIA will be there to answer your questions.
