“Allergy Mom” Shares Tips For Parents at Ferndale Library, Dec 5

FERNDALE, MI– A food allergy diagnosis can be daunting for kids and a constant source of anxiety for parents. Ferndale resident Julie Updyke is embracing the title of “Allergy Mom,” and preparing a presentation for Wed., Dec. 5 at the Ferndale Library to answer any questions for parents or any adult who wants to learn more about this timely topic. Food allergies are on the rise, but many of us aren’t sure about what to do or say when they affect our neighbors and friends. Updyke will share her own experiences of being an “allergy mom” and share ways that attendees can be supportive of families and friends who have children with food allergies.

This program will be beneficial to any parent or caregiver eager to learn more about specifics of raising, aiding or interacting with children who have food allergies. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention found that food allergy in children increased by 50% between 1997-2011. Further research found that 15 million Americans have food allergies, including nearly 6 million children (under age 18). With 1 in 13 children in any classroom expected to be dealing with food allergies, Updyke will talk about proactive ways to be inclusive toward children with food allergies, as well as finding subtle and easy ways to accommodate their needs.

Food allergies are serious and can be a matter of life and death. Updyke’s presentation will work against a tendency (often on social media) to stigmatize or discount the gravity of an increasing amount of kids developing these challenging immune responses to food, including nuts, shellfish, dairy, wheat, and nightshades. No registration is required for this presentation.
