Voter Turnout by City/Twp in Oakland County 2018 Election

(Kurt Metzger, Crystal Proxmire, Nov. 7, 2018)

Oakland County, MI- Oakland County voters came out yesterday in record numbers for a Midterm Election.  The overall turnout percentage of 64.2 percent of all registered voters, compares to 48.0 percent in 2014 and 51.4 percent in 2010.  Turnout in Oakland County communities ranged from a high of 83.7 percent in Lake Angelus (210 voters/251 registered) to a low of 37.4 percent in Pontiac.  Only two other communities had turnout rates below 50 percent – Royal Oak township (43.6 percent) and Hazel Park (48.1).

An amazing 17 of the 51 communities tabulated (villages are tabulated as part of the township in which they are located) had turnout rates over 70 percent.

Following Lake Angelus were:  Huntington Woods (79.0 percent); Southfield township, which is comprised of the villages of Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms and Franklin (76.7 percent); Pleasant Ridge (76.4 percent); and, Sylvan Lake (76.1 percent).

As has been reported in an earlier column, an individual had offered a $1,000 prize to go to the Recreation Department of the turnout winner between Huntington Woods and Pleasant Ridge.

Kurt Metzger is proud of the friendly competition with Huntington Woods.  “I just wanted to send an official note of congratulations to Bob Paul and the voters of Huntington Woods for winning the Midterm Election Turnout Challenge.  While Pleasant Ridge put up some big numbers – 1,796 voters and a 76.3 percent turnout – Huntington Woods put up even bigger numbers – 4,250 voters and a 79.0 percent turnout.  While the Huntington Woods Recreation program will receive $1,000 from a generous donor, both communities should be proud of their consistently high levels of civic participation,” he said.
