Concert at Ferndale Library: Bogart Oct. 12

FERNDALE, MIThe Ferndale Library restarts its monthly live music showcase on October 12 with local power-pop quartet Bogart. The First Stop Friday series has continued to feature local bands inside a library setting for eight years, now. Kelly Bennett, who heads the Circulation Department, made it part of the library’s mission to make connections with and show support toward the community’s music artists. After so many shows, it’s no longer a novelty to “get loud in the library!” The Ferndale Library is essentially another live local music venue! (Minus the bar!)

Bogart will perform at 8 pm on October 12. Their surging, shredding guitars, propulsive rhythms and soaring vocals evoke a blend of 90s flavors like the Breeders and PJ Harvey, as well as high energy alternative indie-rock, acts like The Pillows or local heroes Sponge. The band consists of Douglas Bannerman (formerly of Detroit Pony Express) on lead vocals and guitar, Elise McCoy on bass guitar and vocals (formerly of MPV), Thomas Virga on guitar (formerly of Detroit Pony Express), and Danny David on drums (The Smarties, Marshall Neely and the Deputies of Destruction).

Bogart’s main songwriter, Bannerman, has a knack for writing clever lyrics and powerful melodies that resonate with everyone who hears them. This foundation, backed up by sweet-sounding harmonies, rooted in rock-solid drumming, and killer guitar riffs make Detroit fans sing along in the shower and power drum on steering wheels up and down Gratiot Ave.

This free concert starts early, at least by comparison with other bars and venues in Ferndale’s downtown. That makes the library a perfect “first stop” for anyone planning to hit up the club scene’s later-starting shows.
