Rochester Groups Hosting “Sow the Seeds of Community” Pot Luck July 21

Rochester Groups Hosting “Sow the Seeds of Community” Pot Luck July 21

A coalition of three local community organizations will host Sow the Seeds of Community Pot Luck, a free community event at Rochester Municipal Park, from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21.

The Greater Rochester Area Inclusion Network, (GRAIN); Parents for Educational Equity in Rochester Schools, (PEERS); and Rochester Area Interfaith Network, (RAIN), have joined forces to start a conversation about diversity and inclusion through the things all people have in common – food and music.

Participants are invited to bring a dish to share. Dishes that reflect participants’ heritage or culture are especially welcome.

Live world and roots music will be provided by the Stone Sound Collective and Common Chords. Stone Sound Collective is headed by Mark Stone, a multi-percussionist, composer and educator. He is an Associate Professor in the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at Oakland University where he coordinates the World Music and Percussion Program. Robert Jones and Matt Watroba are the veteran traditional blues and folk musicians behind Common Chords whose mission is to connect artists and diverse communities to unleash the power of shared cultural expression. Each group’s performances celebrate diversity and connect communities through their music. Both performances will feature audience participation.

Children’s activities will include an art quilt project. Children will be invited to create a fabric square that represents who they are. Each square will be incorporated into a large quilt that will eventually be displayed throughout the Rochester Community Schools district.

The GRAIN/PEERS/RAIN coalition was formed in April 2018 to foster deeper awareness, conversation and understanding of diversity and inclusion in the Greater Rochester area.

The potluck is open to all residents of Rochester and Rochester Hills and families whose children attend schools within the Rochester Community Schools district.
