Rebecca Phoenix Fundraisers for Study Abroad Program, April 19, 20 and 27

Ferndale, MI – Ferndale student Rebecca Phoenix is raising money for a trip to study abroad. She’s got a few fundraisers in the works.  Here’s what she had to say:

“I will be holding pop-up fundraisers around Ferndale to raise money for a study abroad opportunity that I will undertake this spring and summer through the Japan Center for Michigan University. This opportunity to study in Japan is an honor I have worked my entire school career towards. I am a Japanese History major at the University of Michigan Dearborn.

Events will be at:

3 Winks April 19 from 5-8pm

Rouge Salon and Nail Studio April 20th 1-6pm

Boston Tea Room April 27 from 3pm-8pm

I am folding origami cranes to take to the Hiroshima Children’s Peace Park as a symbol of world Peace. I will be giving a live origami demonstration and showing people how to fold cranes for a small donation.

I wanted to focus on folding cranes, not only because of the success of my 2014 campaign, but because they are a symbol of peace. My studies will take me down to Hiroshima again and I would like to donate 1000 more cranes because they have meant so much to me and the community.

I’d also like to better involve the Ferndale community on this message of peace in these chaotic and turbulent times. It is because of the community that I was able to go on my 2014 trip which validated my love of Japanese history. I owe everything to the community and I hope they’d want to participate in sending peace around the world.”

Phoenix has started a website about her journey, where she also accepts donations. Check it out at
