A Sampling of Brahms: Piano, Violin & Horn April 22 in Highland

Highland, MI- On Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 3:00 p.m., The Huron Valley Council for the Arts will present A Sampling of Brahms showcasing some of the composer’s most characteristic music styles for piano, violin, and horn. The program begins with Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118 (1893), a piece that Johannes Brahms dedicated to Clara Schumann and is considered one of the his most beloved piano solos.  This piece will be performed by Mr. Steve Wogaman.  He has performed with colleagues including the Aeolus String Quartet and members of the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Detroit Symphony.  Steve was appointed President of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit in May 2011, only the fourth president in the organization’s 74-year history, and also serves on the board of Chamber Music America and chaired its 2017 National Conference.

The Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 (‘Regensonate’ or ‘Rain’ sonata), demonstrates how Brahms utilized instrumental solo Classical compositional techniques with a nod to the musical Romanticism of the 19th century.  Ms. Sonia Lee will be performing the piece.  Her recent chamber music performances include a world premiere of Hope Dies Last, a composition by Alexandra du Bois commissioned by the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings for violinist Ida Kavafian to commemorate the centenary of the Armenian Genocide. Sonia is also an award-winning film composer, having written scores for many directors, and she also composed music for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in Seoul, Korea.

The program will conclude with the Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano in E-Flat Major, Op. 40.  In composing this piece, Brahms combined three instruments that he himself played as a young man.  Dr. David Denniston, horn,  performs in Broadway, opera, ballet, chamber music, and studio sessions for television, film, and commercial music.  David was also a founding member of the Manhattan Brass Quintet (now the Manhattan Brass), and is currently on the music faculty at Oakland University.

The concert will be held at 205 West Livingston Rd Highland MI and also features visual works from local artists.  Tickets are $15.00 each and may be purchased by visiting the HVCA , by calling (248) 889-8660 during our business hours (W-F 1-5pm; Sat 11a-4p), or at Main Street Art 432 N.
