Berkley Councilperson Steve Baker Honored with MML Award

Berkley, MI- The Michigan Municipal League has honored Berkley Mayor Pro Tem Steve Baker with the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award. He received the recognition during the League’s annual Capital Conference Awards Gala March 20 in Lansing.

Baker was elected to the Berkley City Council in November of 2009 and has been a regular supporter of League events and programs for many years. He is a past member of the League Board of Trustees. The award was presented to Baker by Ferndale Councilperson Melanie Piana, vice president of the League Board of Trustees.

“Simply put, Steve Baker makes local government fun!,” Piana said. “A planner at heart, Steve wants the best for communities. He is highly enthusiastic and one of the nicest, most courteous people you’ll meet.”

While a member of the League Board of Trustees, Baker served on the Convention Ad Hoc Committee and worked with staff to recommend changes regarding Convention, CEAs, Capital Conference, and Regional Meetings. He also is a member of the League’s Elected Officials Academy board and is a Level 2 graduate of the Elected Officials Academy. He was a trainer for the EOA Ambassador Program where he taught other elected officials on making the EOA PowerPoint presentation.

He is always available to assist League staff when needed and is consistently excited about new technology by regularly presenting on the topic at several League conferences. He has served as a panelist at the Newly Elected Officials training programs and is a League Foundation contributor, and has been for many years. Baker is a past member of the Legislative Governance Committee and the Energy & Technology Committee.

Baker and his wife Nicole have lived in Berkley for more than 20 years. He leads the IT strategy and innovation agenda for DTE Energy, where he oversees IT-related interaction and outreach, strategic alignment and integration, and innovation and feasibility on behalf of the company.

Steve holds a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science and masters of science in software engineering from Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Computing Professional (CCP), and also a published author, conference speaker, and Six-Sigma Black Belt candidate.

About the award: The Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award, first awarded in 2008, is a peer nomination in honor and memory of Rogers City Councilmember Jim Sinclair, a tireless promoter of local government and fervent believer in education and training for elected officials. It is a tribute to Sinclair’s legacy of personal dedication, passion and commitment to the League and its mission.
