Whiskey Charmers and ATMIG at Ferndale Library March 9

FERNDALE, MI– The Ferndale Library can be a perfect “first stop” for anyone hitting up the downtown club scene on Friday, March 9, when they open up afterhours for a free concert featuring two local bands, The Whiskey Charmers and ATMIG.

“We’ve been seeing attendance steadily grow ever since we pushed back our start time to 8pm,” said Kelly Bennett, FADL’s Head of Circulation and First Stop Friday coordinator. “It’s great to see a mixed crowd of the regular music scenesters with new parents or older music lovers who might not be able to make it out to the bars for the later concerts.”

First Stop Fridays are an extension of Bennett’s efforts to align the library as a primary supporter of the local music scene–combined with a substantial collection of circulating CDs that feature music made exclusively by Michigan artists.

The Whiskey Charmers are a Ferndale favorite, and perform regularly around venues in SE Michigan. They combine atmospheric blues, slick country rhythms, reverb-heavy surf guitar and soulful vocals. They’ve garnered comparisons to vibe-heavy rock & country icons like Loretta Lynn, Dick Dale, Cowboy Junkies, and Mark Knopfler. ATMIG are a veritable smorgasbord of styles, with dual lead vocals, guitar, bass & drums whirling together aerodynamic arrangements of indie-pop and literate baroque-rock, drawing from anything between The Shins to The Cure to Modest Mouse.

“A concert at our library can be a great opportunity for local bands to reach audiences that they wouldn’t normally be exposed to,” said FADL Circulation Supervisor Jeff Milo. “Plus, even though the bands can be as loud as they like – there isn’t any competition with big screen TVs showing sporting events or the clatter of a bar, so bands can encounter markedly more attentive audiences!”

The Ferndale Library’s concerts are typically hosted on the “First Friday” of every month, but this concert was scheduled one-week ahead of the Hamtramck Music Festival–which will undoubtedly prove to envelop a vast majority of musicians and music fans. First Stop Fridays are sponsored by The Friends of the Ferndale Library, a Michigan nonprofit organization assembled to engage the community and raise funds for the library.
