Town Hall on Public Schools Feb. 13

Detroit, MI – February 13th Detroit Town Hall to bring together National Teacher Union Leaders, Local Families for Critical Conversation on Public Schools.

National Teacher Union Leaders Randi Weingarten (AFT) and Lily Garcia (NEA) will meet local youth, parents, and community leaders for a Critical Conversation on Public Education Tuesday, February 13,2018 at 6 pm at Wayne State University’s Law School in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium.  The Town Hall, the second organized by the National #WeChoose Campaign in recent months, will be live-streamed nationally and promises to further the conversation on solutions to persistent educational inequity in our cities, particularly for low-income youth of color. Using the hashtag #WeChoose, which is a campaign that encompasses over 25 Organizations including Journey for Justice, Bad Ass Teachers, AROS, Michigan #WeChoose, and a host of other organizations eager to lean in on the conversation of equality in education and a moratorium on school privatization. #WeChoose has been shining a national spotlight on the ways in which it says school choice and the loss of local control has actually delivered “choice” for private educational management companies at the cost of real choice and community control for urban communities of color.

Local youth Timothy Wright (Cody High), Carla Underwood (Western High), Jaia Simone (Inkster MI) & DeMarius Brown (Albion MI) will join Detroit parent leader Aliya Moore and Chicago educator and activist Tara Stamps in sharing their concerns with union leaders, elected officials, education stakeholders, and local media.

The event will afford an opportunity for participants to strategize around building equity and justice in public education.
