Underground Railroad Presentation at Baldwin Library Feb. 13

BIRMINGHAM, MI – Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements made by African Americans throughout our nation’s history. During February, the Baldwin Library, along with the Race Relations and Diversity Task Force, is hosting three programs to commemorate Black History Month.

On Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m., local author Evelyn Millstein will discuss her book, “The Underground Railroad: A Movement that Changed America.”

The Sphinx Organization will present the Ivalas Quartet in concert on Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m. The Sphinx Organization is the Detroit-based national organization dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Members of the Ivalas Quartet include violinists Anita Dumar and Reuben Kebede, violinist Caleb Georges, and cellist Pedro Sánchez.

Oakland University history professor Dr. Erin Dwyer returns to Baldwin on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. She will share how American slaves used poison in the resistance effort in the Antebellum South. According to Dwyer, “Poison has been called a ‘woman’s weapon,’ but it has historically been a weapon of the dispossessed. I will explore how enslaved people in the United States and the Caribbean used poison, and slaveholders’ fears of enslaved poisoners, to survive or resist enslavement.”

During February, the Youth department is hosting a Black History Month scavenger hunt to honor the many accomplishments of African American musicians, past and present. During this self-guided search, children will read about the historical significance of notable African American musicians as they search for photos of each person hidden around the Library.

The Baldwin Public Library is located in downtown Birmingham at 300 W. Merrill Street. The Library’s hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Library’s website www.baldwinlib.org has information on how to register for a Library Card and access all of the Library’s services.
